- Judith Ivey
I am happy to announce our second production at the Laura Pels Theatre next season. Following the New York premiere of The Understudy will be a new interpretation of a classic, The Glass Menagerie, directed by Gordon Edelstein. The cast will include Patch Darragh as Tom Wingfield, Judith Ivey as Amanda Wingfield and Keira Keeley as Laura Wingfield.
In this fresh interpretation of Tennessee Williams’ haunting memory play, Tom Wingfield (Darragh) sits writing in a hotel room, trying to forge his past into art. Soon Tom’s space is overtaken by the cramped apartment he once shared with his mother Amanda (Ivey), his beloved sister Laura (Keeley) and unrequited dreams as fragile as Laura’s collection of tiny glass animals. There, Tom relives the Gentleman Caller’s visit – the night that changed his family forever.
I am honored that Gordon Edelstein has chosen to return to the Roundabout with this touching production, which premiered this past May at the Long Wharf Theatre (where he serves as the Artistic Director). Gordon’s work last appeared on the Roundabout stage in 2001, when he directed Martin McDonagh’s A Skull in Connemara.
Of course it is also a joy to welcome back two-time Tony® Award winner Judith Ivey (Hurlyburly, Steaming), who last appeared in our 2001 production of Follies, and Patch Darragh, who appeared at the Pels just last season in Crimes of the Heart. Keira Keeley’s New York credits include The Thugs, by Adam Bock, and Romeo and Juliet with the New York Philharmonic.
The design team for The Glass Menagerie will include Michael Yeargan (sets), Martin Pakledinaz (costumes), Jennifer Tipton (lights) and David Budries (sound).
Previews will begin March 5th, 2010, and the production will officially open on Wednesday, March 24th.
